Stunning 1960 Torpedo 2-tone Model 18 Typewriter
What an extraordinary typewriter! In nearly-new condition, it is a gorgeous example of the finest quality mid-century design and construction. This is an extremely rare colour-combination for the Model 18—in many hundreds of these that I have handled, this is the first with this blue and cream combo. It comes from a wealthy family in the Bavaria region of Germany. When the father—who had purchased the typewriter new in 1960—died some years ago, they accidentally threw away the case and original papers. So, sadly, these are no longer available. (I think this is one of the saddest things I've heard happen in a long time...)
The famous "Model 18" from Torpedo is one of the most respected of typewriters. It is a handsome looking typewriter and a dream to type on. This is an extraordinary example from 1960 in a fabulous, original two-tone colour combination. The colour finish is all original—it has not been over-painted. It is a solid work-horse and is in excellent condition cosmetically and in full, original working condition mechanically. It has been outfitted with a new Acme Signature Blue ribbon. The typing action is wonderfully fast and solid.
Acme typewriters have been the choice of discerning collectors and writers more than 1,000 times since we began selling online in 2016. They are fully guaranteed to work. Most shipments to the US arrive in 3 days--often much faster than most domestic shipments within the US. Acme typewriters are carefully selected, beautifully restored and come with a one-year mechanical warranty and lifetime customer-service. Each comes with a lead seal, attached to the body, identifying it as a fully-restored Acme typewriter. Many new dealers strive to imitate us--none succeed.
The Model 18 proved to be such a popular model typewriter, in so many ways, that it was produced under various brands (incl. Torpedo and Remington) and sold throughout the world.
Cosmetically, this typewriter is nearly new. All the chrome is in perfect condition. The body finish is almost entirely without a blemish, although there is a tiny, generally unseen area on the rear panel where there is wear.
Mechanically, this Model 18 is in perfect working condition. The platen roller on this typewriter is clean and smooth and takes the imprint well (see photo). The feet are like new: soft and pliable. (If you know Model 18's, you know that this is a weak point of the design--but not on this typewriter!)
The typeface is a lovely E;ite with 11 characters to the inch (see photo). The keyboard is QWERTY with characters for European languages. It comes with a new ribbon and two, vintage, metal ribbon spools.
I can probably find a case in the storeroom that will fit this Torpedo. This can be discussed with its next owner.
