SORRY SOLD! Hermes Baby 1947 with canvas cover
  • SORRY SOLD! Hermes Baby 1947 with canvas cover

    € 520,00Prijs

This is a very fine example of a postwar HERMES BABY Typewriter. Hermes is one of the most renowned brands and models of typewriter ever made, and this is an exceptional example of the "Baby" model, also known as the "Rocket", from 1947. Unusually, it comes with a canvas cover that goes over the entire typewriter. I have never seen one of these covers before.

This is the perfect portable typing machine, weighing only ~3.6kg/8 lbs! This typewriter is in fine condition, mechanically and cosmetically, and has been thoroughly cleaned, serviced, adjusted and aligned. It comes with a new platen for pleasurable typing. It is a typing machine that is ready to work for another 60 years of typing service. And with its brilliant Hermes engineering, it does that with elegance, smoothness and solidity.

This is a fully-working--as original--typewriter. The only thing that you have to do is sit down, put paper on the roller and start typing. This Hermes comes with the "Acme" lead certification seal attached to the typewriter under the keyboard. This seal permanently identifies this typewriter as a genuine Acme-restored typewriter and provides for a 6-month warranty at no charge. (See below for details.) We guarantee safe delivery and provide careful and attentive after-purchase advice and assistance from the date of purchase to the end of eternity to ensure your full satisfaction. In terms of an investment, the Acme Seal proves that this machine was restored in 2020 by the Acme Type Machine Company. This can add value in the event that you wish to sell this typewriter in the future.

Overall, this typewriter is in excellent, original condition. The chrome parts are in top condition with no signs of corrosion. The keys are clean and unmarked by use. Both platen roller knobs are solid and clean. The body finish is in wonderful condition with uniform colour. This typewriter is original and has not been over-painted or otherwise changed from its originally manufactured state. There are, here and there some signs of usage and wear, but nothing particularly notable.

Mechanically, it is in perfectly excellent working condition. The platen-roller has been professionally recovered with new rubber. The paper feeder rollers are like new. All mechanisms have been tested and adjusted and work like new. It has been fitted with two vintage metal ribbon spools.  Everything on this typewriter is original to its manufacture and purchase except the new platen, new rubber feet and the new ribbon.

The keyboard is a QWERTY keyboard (English language) and has the elegant typeface of Hermes Pica (10 cpi). It comes with two original metal ribbon spools.

The case/cover is in beautiful condition both inside and out. The colour is uniform and unfaded. The interior is in excellent condition and has a sticker from the previous owner. The canvas cover has some signs of wear and use, but the zipper is intact and works well, as does the latch. There is some light tearing on the placket that holds the handle to the bag, but it is superficial.

Notes on Platens: If you are shopping for a typewriter, please note that the Platen (the black, rubber-covered roller on which the paper is wound and which receives the strike of the metal key to imprint the letter) is one of the most important elements for the enjoyable use of your typewriter and for making a correct imprint on the paper. Over time, the rubber becomes hard. This hardness results in an unpleasant, loud clatter as you type, a harder shock to your finger bones, and a faulty imprint of the letter on the paper. In the glory days of typing, platens would be replaced every few years, just like replacing the tires on your car. The typical cost for a new platen is around 125$, not including labour costs. If you are spending hundreds of dollars on a typewriter, take the time to ask the seller about the platen. Ask the seller what is the hardness measurement of the platen. It should be between 85 and 95. Most dealers simply clean off the platen and don't mention the hardness in their description. At Acme we install new platens, at no extra cost, on any typewriter that needs one in order to ensure the best typing experience and the best, decades-long operation of your typewriter.

Notes on the Warranty: Should anything require repair the Acme Type Machine Company (an established company in the Netherlands with Chamber of Commerce registration number 74166247) will repair it free of charge when shipped to our workshop. Due to the costs of shipping and the possibilities therein for damage during the shipping process we will work with you to make any required adjustments or repairs at home prior to taking the step to ship it to our workshop in Holland. Should it be preferable due to costs involved, we will also discuss the possibility of bringing it to a local professional typewriter repair service to make the necessary repairs.
The warranty does not cover damage due to mishandling or dropping the typewriter, breakage of platen roller knobs or for ordinary typewriter maintenance such as ribbon changing, platen roller renovation, character adjustment due to extensive use etc.
The case is in superb, original condition. The hasp works perfectly and comes with the original key (not pictured--I forgot!). The interior paper flap is in perfect condition and the bottom covering and the covering behind the flap are a lovely red velvet in superb condition. The interior cloth lining is overall in excellent condition with no fabric tears and it looks simply lovely!
